Northern Lights Aero Foundation announces 2024 ‘Elsie’ recipients

May 31, 2024 Toronto – The Northern Lights Aero Foundation is pleased to announce this year’s recipients of the prestigious “Elsie” award, recognizing Canadian women who have made a significant contribution to aviation or aerospace.

The award, named for aviation pioneer and human rights activist, Elsie Gregory MacGill, recognizes outstanding women across seven categories.

“The 2024 ‘Elsie’ recipients represent the diversity of the industry-wide roles in which women are natural leaders and role models who inspire and support their colleagues to excel in aviation and aerospace. We look forward to celebrating their achievements at our 15th Elsie Gala,” said Lynne McMullen, President of the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

The 2024 award recipients are:

Business – Laura Sinclair Co-founder and current COO/CFO of Elevate Aviation. Laura has helped transform Elevate into a multi-million dollar enterprise in only six years. Laura also works full-time as a NAV Canada air traffic controller. In 2023, she was the recipient of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Medal and was featured in Edify Magazine’s Top 40 under 40. In 2019, Laura was also honoured as one of Wings
Magazine Top 20 under 40.

Education – Sherry Cooper Director of Student Services, CFI, Pilot Examiner and President of Sky Wings Aviation. Sherry has accrued over 19,000 hours and is currently a Class 1 instructor, multi-engine, instrument-rated pilot who has significantly contributed to the success of the next generation of aviators. She was the former President of the Red Deer Air Show and became one of the first women airshow Air
Bosses.

Engineering – Pat Greene Staff Systems Engineer and Technical Lead, Space Station Programme, Robotics and Space Operations, MDA Space. For decades, Pat has been committed to human spaceflight and mission success. In this role, she was instrumental in the Canadarm 2 approval for the International Space Station. She is in high demand as an independent technical reviewer.

Flight Operations – Elizabeth Mitches Chief Pilot, Porter Airlines. Elizabeth has moved up through the ranks at Porter to become Chief Pilot, leading over 300 pilots. Under her guidance, Porter has achieved gender parity in leadership roles on the Dash 8 team. She has overseen the implementation and improvement of safety systems at several air operators. She earned her MBA from the Ivey School of Business and is a Transport Canada-approved Check Pilot.

Government – Captain Erin Edwards Canada’s first Canadian Astronaut Coordination Officer, providing operational support to the Canadian Astronaut Corps. Erin is also the first non-astronaut to be assigned as Astronaut Office Deputy Branch Chief for Crew Operations. Prior to her NASA posting, Erin flew the CH146 Griffon helicopter with 427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron in the CAF, where she was one of a select number of women to complete the rigorous course and qualify as an aircraft commander in Special Operations Aviation Squadron.

Trailblazer – Terri Super Owner and operator of Super T Aviation. Terri is a leader in the flight instruction and business communities. At the time that she earned her Airline Transport Pilot License, there were fewer than 100 women ATPL-holders in Canada. In the early 1990s, Terri instructed in the Mount Royal College aviation program. She went on to become a Captain on the Jetstream 31/32 and Operations Manager for Alberta Citylink. She continues to work in both flying and managerial roles in the industry.

Rising Star – Cassandra Hepp Lead Aircraft Maintenance Engineer (AME) for Heavy Aero in Edmonton. Cassandra has demonstrated her skills at competitions across Canada and the U.S, garnering a number of awards. As an Ambassador with Elevate Aviation, she leads a team of volunteers in mentorship community events and awareness activities. Cassandra encourages young women to consider aircraft maintenance as a career.

Rising StarZoey Williams First Officer B777 at Air Canada. Zoey started her flight training at the age of 15. Her career to date has seen her as a flight instructor, a pilot in the north and an airline pilot. She has completed an Advanced Diploma in Aviation Management, a Bachelor’s Degree in Aeronautics and Aviation Management and a Master’s in Business Administration, specializing in aviation and international business. Zoey is a board member of the Urban Pilots Network, encouraging and educating young people from urban communities about opportunities in aviation.

31 mai 2024 Toronto – La Northern Lights Aero Foundation est heureuse d’annoncer les lauréates 2024 des prestigieux prix « Elsie », qui rendent hommage à des Canadiennes ayant apporté une contribution remarquable aux secteurs de l’aviation ou de l’aéronautique.

Le prix, nommé en l’honneur d’Elsie Gregory MacGill, pionnière de l’aviation et militante pour les droits de la personne, récompense les femmes d’exception dans sept catégories. 

Les lauréates du prix « Elsie » 2024 représentent la diversité des rôles à l’échelle de l’industrie dans lesquels les femmes sont des leaders naturelles et des modèles qui inspirent et apportent leur soutien à d’autres femmes pour qu’elles excellent dans l’aviation et l’aéronautique. Nous avons hâte de célébrer leurs réalisations lors de notre 15e gala Elsie ! », a déclaré Lynne McMullen, présidente de la Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

Les lauréates des prix 2024 sont :

Prix Affaires – Laura Sinclair Cofondatrice et directrice de l’exploitation/directrice financière d’Elevate Aviation.

Laura a contribué à transformer Elevate en une entreprise de plusieurs millions de dollars en seulement six ans. Laura travaille également à temps plein comme contrôleuse de la circulation aérienne à NAV Canada. En 2019, elle a été honorée comme l’une des Top 20 sous 40 ans du magazine Wings. En 2023, elle a reçu la médaille du jubilé de platine de la Reine Elizabeth II et a été nommée parmi les Top 40 sous 40 ans par la publication Edify.

Prix Éducation – Sherry Cooper Directrice des services aux étudiants, CFI, pilote-examinatrice et présidente de Sky Wings Aviation.

Sherry a accumulé plus de 19 000 heures de vol et est actuellement instructrice de classe 1, pilote multimoteur et qualifiée pour le vol aux instruments. Elle a contribué de manière importante au succès de la prochaine génération d’aviateurs. Elle est l’ancienne présidente du spectacle aérien de Red Deer et est devenue l’une des premières femmes patronnes « Air Bosses » de spectacles aériens.

Prix Ingénierie – Pat Greene Ingénieure des systèmes et responsable technique, Programme de la station spatiale, Robotique et opérations spatiales, MDA Space.

Pendant des décennies, Pat s’est consacré aux vols spatiaux habités et au succès des missions. À ce titre, elle a joué un rôle déterminant dans l’approbation du Canadarm 2 pour la Station spatiale internationale. Elle est très en demande en tant qu’examinatrice technique indépendante.

Prix Opérations aériennes – Elizabeth Mitches Pilote en chef, Porter Airlines.

Elizabeth a gravi les échelons chez Porter pour devenir pilote en chef, dirigeant plus de 300 pilotes. Sous sa direction, Porter a atteint la parité hommes-femmes dans les rôles de direction au sein de l’équipe Dash 8. Elle a supervisé la mise en œuvre et l’amélioration des systèmes de sécurité chez plusieurs exploitants aériens. Elle est titulaire d’une maîtrise en administration des affaires de l’Ivey Business School et est une pilote vérificatrice approuvée par Transports Canada.

Prix Gouvernement – Capitaine Erin Edwards est la première officière de coordination des astronautes du Canada, fournissant un soutien opérationnel au Corps des astronautes canadiens.

Erin est également la première femme non-astronaute à être affectée au poste de chef adjoint de la branche des opérations de l’équipage du bureau des astronautes. Avant son affectation à la NASA, Erin a piloté l’hélicoptère CH146 Griffon avec le 427e Escadron Opérations Spéciales dans les FAC, où elle a été l’une des rares femmes à suivre le cours rigoureux et à se qualifier comme commandante d’aéronef dans l’escadron d’aviation d’Opérations Spéciales.

Prix Précurseure – Terri Super Propriétaire et exploitante de Super T Aviation.

Terri est une leader dans les communautés de la formation de pilotes et des affaires. Au moment où elle a obtenu sa licence de pilote de ligne, il y avait moins de 100 femmes titulaires d’ATPL au Canada. Au début des années 1990, Terri a enseigné dans le programme d’aviation du Mount Royal College. Elle est ensuite devenue commandante sur le Jetstream 31/32 et directrice des opérations pour Alberta Citylink. Elle continue de travailler dans le domaine de l’aviation en tant que gestionnaire et pilote.

Prix Étoile montante – Cassandra Hepp – Chef d’équipeTechnicienne d’entretien d’aéronefs pour Heavy Aero à Edmonton.

Cassandra a démontré ses compétences lors de compétitions au Canada et aux États-Unis, remportant de nombreux prix. En tant qu’ambassadrice d’Elevate Aviation, elle dirige une équipe de bénévoles dans le cadre d’événements communautaires de mentorat et d’activités de sensibilisation. Cassandra encourage les jeunes femmes à envisager une carrière dans le domaine de l’entretien d’aéronefs.

Prix Étoile montante – Zoey Williams – Première officière B777 chez Air Canada.  Zoey a commencé sa formation de pilote à l’âge de 15 ans. Elle a débuté sa carrière en tant qu’instructrice de vol, ensuite pilote dans le Nord et maintenant pilote de ligne. Elle est titulaire d’un diplôme d’études supérieures en gestion de l’aviation, d’un baccalauréat en aéronautique et gestion de l’aviation et d’une maîtrise en administration des affaires, avec une spécialisation en aviation et en commerce international. Zoey est membre du conseil d’administration de l’Urban Pilots Network, qui encourage et informe les jeunes des communautés urbaines sur les opportunités dans le secteur de l’aviation.

Northern Lights Aero Foundation Announces New President

Toronto, May 7, 2024 – Northern Lights Aero Foundation (NLAF) is pleased to announce the appointment of its new president, Lynne McMullen. Lynne embraces the Foundation’s mission and believes that celebrating, inspiring, and promoting women’s accomplishments is key to the advancement of the aviation industry. Lynne has been a Director with the NLAF since 2015 and served as Secretary since 2020. The Foundation looks forward to the strides Lynne will take in progressing its mandate to encourage every woman’s ambition.

Lynne is the 2014 recipient of the Elsie MacGill Northern Lights Award in Education, and a respected aviation professional. She brings over 25 years of experience in aviation with a focus on pilot training, having held progressive leadership positions within the aviation education industry.

As President of Cygnet Aviation Academy LP (Cygnet), Lynne continues to develop and advance cutting edge programming for the next generation of aviation professionals and works with several industry boards, including the Air Transport Association of Canada and Aviation Accreditation Board International.

The NLAF thanks the outgoing President, Kathleen Lang for her tireless efforts over the past five years to improve awareness and foster aviation as a career choice for women of all ages. Kathleen will remain on the board as Gala Director and past President.

The annual gala will take place in Brampton at the Pearson Convention Centre on October 5, 2024. Registration will open in June.

Elle compte plus de 25 ans d’expérience dans le secteur de l’aviation, particulièrement en entraînement des pilotes, et elle a occupé des postes de direction d’importance croissante au sein de l’industrie dans le domaine de la formation.

Captain Judy Cameron 2024 Scholarship Recipients

Toronto, ON – The Northern Lights Aero Foundation is pleased to announce eight recipients of the fifth annual Captain Judy Cameron scholarship for Canadian women in aviation. Deserving women were chosen from all across Canada, who are notable not only for their own accomplishments, but also for their inspiration and encouragement of others. Thanks to Air Canada and CAE for their generous funding of $5,000 for each scholarship.

“Past recipients have become flight instructors, maintenance engineers, and commercial pilots across Canada,” said Captain Judy Cameron, Boeing 777 Captain at Air Canada (retired). “It’s wonderful to see the momentum Air Canada has created with these scholarships that began five years ago and were joined by CAE for the past two years.”

Nominations Open for Prestigious Aviation and Aerospace Awards

3 January 2024 Toronto, ON – The Northern Lights Aero Foundation is now accepting nominations for its 15th annual awards program. Each year, the national not-for-profit foundation honours outstanding Canadian women who have made a significant contribution to aviation or aerospace, and who continue to lay the ground work for other women to enter or excel in these industries.

The Northern Lights Aero Foundation’s Elsie MacGill Awards – The “Elsie” is named after aviation pioneer and human rights advocate Elsie Gregory MacGill, the world’s first female aircraft designer. MacGill graduated from the University of Toronto’s electrical engineering program in 1927 and later became pivotal in the design and production of the Hawker Hurricane in Canada during the Second World War. During her career, MacGill was appointed to the Canadian Royal Commission on the Status of Women, and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

The Foundation is always working on new initiatives, including outreach, mentorship and scholarship. We have also set up a Junior Board to teach young women about board governance.

The 2024 recipients will be selected by a judging panel comprised of industry and government professionals, and will be honoured at the “Elsie” Awards gala on October 5, 2024, in Toronto.

Air Canada continues to be the premier sponsor for the Northern Lights gala.

Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship Applications 2024

1 November 2023, TORONTO – Northern Lights Aero Foundation is excited to announce that the 5th annual Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship is open for applications starting today.

Air Canada and CAE are partnering to provide scholarships for up to eight aspiring Canadian women in aviation.

The Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship, awarded by Air Canada, targets women who are pursuing careers as commercial fixed wing pilots or aircraft maintenance engineers. The Captain Judy Cameron scholarship, awarded by CAE, targets women who are pursuing careers as commercial fixed wing pilots. Preference is given to those who volunteer to help other women in aviation or who have financial need.

Applications are open November 1 to 30, 2023 on the Northern Lights Aero Foundation website.

The award, named after aviation pioneer and human rights activist, Elsie Gregory MacGill, recognizes outstanding women across seven categories.

“Once again, eight incredible women are being recognized by our organization. We look forward to celebrating their accomplishments at our new, larger venue, The Pearson Convention Centre,” says Kathleen Lang, President, Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

The 2023 recipients are:

Business Award – Cathy Press

Cathy Press, CEO of Chinook Helicopters, holds both Fixed Wing and Rotary Wing ATPLs, Class 1 Instructor and Pilot Examiner ratings. In 1997, she became the first female helicopter flight instructor in Canada. She has received numerous awards including: Elevate Aviation’s ‘Inspire’ award; Bank of Montreal’s Innovation and Global Growth Award, and, Enterprise Magazine’s Enterprising Women of the Year award. In 2019, she was recognized as one of Canada’s “Most Powerful Women” by the Women’s Executive Network. Cathy is actively involved with various industry organizations and serves on multiple boards. She has recently expanded European training partnerships in Canada and is leading the revolutionary “Virtual Simulator” project at Chinook. With a remarkable background in aviation, Cathy’s leadership has driven Chinook’s growth, expanded its training programs and established strategic partnerships. Her accomplishments have made her a role model and catalyst for change in the industry.

Education Award – Dr. Joana Rocha

Dr. Joana Rocha is a Professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at Carleton University, in Ottawa, Ontario. She joined the department in 2012 as an Assistant Professor, became an Associate Professor in July 2017, and Full Professor in July of 2023. Prior to joining Carleton, Dr. Rocha was a visiting researcher at NASA Langley Research Centre and the National Institute of Aerospace in Virginia. She received her PhD and MASc degrees at the University of Victoria. Her research focuses on aircraft noise prediction, design and optimization of aircraft structures for noise reduction, aero-acoustics, turbulence-flow induced noise, structural acoustics and turbulence modelling. She and her research team have collaborated with Bombardier and the NRC. She has received several research awards including a Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council’s Discovery Grant. Joana is a past Associate Chair of Graduate Studies in her department. She has participated in talks and outreach events, encouraging women to pursue engineering and sciences.

Engineering Award – Heather Beaton

Heather Beaton is a Fellow in Bombardier’s Aircraft Design & Development engineering organization, providing leadership and decision-making to critical strategic, safety and certification decisions across Bombardier sites and platforms. She has been at Bombardier since 1988 and has held various engineering positions in their product development teams over the years, including product planning and new aircraft studies for new and derivative models with Bombardier’s Advanced Design and Strategic Technology teams. This includes development, flight test, certification and continued airworthiness of the CRJ series, Challenger 300 & 600 series, Global Express G5/6500 and G7500 series and the C Series/A220. She has been Knowledge Owner for the control systems knowledge domain and Chair of the SAE International A-6A Systems Integration Committee. Heather founded the Bombardier’s Women in Engineering affinity group, providing networking, mentoring and project opportunities.

Flight Operations Award – Captain Kristin Long

Kristin Long is a Captain and Standards Pilot on the B737 at WestJet Airlines. She began her aviation career as a flight attendant while attending university. She has a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of British Columbia and an Aviation Diploma from the University of the Fraser Valley and Coastal Pacific Aviation. Prior to the airline, her flying experience included passenger, cargo and medevac flights to remote communities throughout Manitoba and northwestern Ontario. To date, she has logged over 15,000 hours. Kristin is active in many organizations and boards, including Women of Winnipeg (WoW) and the inaugural board of the RCAF Foundation. She is the founding president of Northern Spirit Chapter of Women in Aviation, Committee Chair of the annual Girls in Aviation Day and is an honorary Colonel with the Royal Canadian Armed Forces. She volunteers with the Royal Aviation Museum of Western Canada. Kristin is also the proud mother of two boys.

Government Award – Major Catherine Cabot

Major Catherine Cabot is an aerospace engineer in the Canadian Armed Forces. She has held a variety of positions supporting the CP 140 Aurora fleet in first line maintenance and software projects. Catherine has also had the privilege of serving as Aide-de-Camp to the Chief of the Defence Staff (CDS) and Executive Assistant to the Chief of Staff to the CDS. Most recently, she was the Deputy Commanding Officer of 3 Air Maintenance Squadron, responsible for second line maintenance of the CF188s. Catherine will take on a new challenge this summer as the Senior Aide-de-Camp to the Governor General. Her past deployments have included Afghanistan (2013) and Romania (2022). Catherine earned her undergraduate degree in software engineering from Concordia University, a post-graduate degree in Aerospace Program Management from University of Manitoba and a Master of Public Administration from the Royal Military College of Canada. She is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Business Administration with a focus on project management at l’Université du Québec en Outaouais. Catherine is also the proud mother of two.

Trailblazer Award – Glenna Sharratt

Glenna Sharratt is a flight operations consultant providing regulatory support and guidance to Canadian air operators for the past 20 years. She has more than 45 years in the aviation industry with experience as a commercial pilot, advanced flight training instructor, approved check pilot, 20 years as a Transport Canada Flight Operations Inspector and 20 years as a consultant. Inspired by her father, Glenn Sharratt, a private pilot who loved to fly his Mooney as often as possible, she started flying when she was 19 years old. She earned her Private Pilot’s Licence at the Brandon Flying Club in three weeks, her commercial pilot licence a few months later, and then her multi-engine and instrument ratings before she was 21 years old. Her first flying job was on a Cessna 337 in Manitoba. In 1976, she became the first female pilot at Perimeter Aviation, based in Winnipeg. In 1983, Glenna joined Transport Canada as an Inspector where she worked in the Ottawa, Winnipeg, Vancouver and Victoria offices. In 2003, she started GS Aviation Consulting Inc., based in Victoria, B.C. which has become a well-respected flight operations consulting business. She has assisted hundreds of air operators with AOC start-ups, quality assurance audits, Company Operations Manuals, etc. Glenna has been a member of the Manitoba Aviation Council, the Canadian Business Aviation Association, the BC Aviation Council and the Northern Air Transport Association.

Rising Star Award – Alisha Sohpaul

Alisha Sohpaul is a Transport Canada Airworthiness Inspector and is proudly part of the 2.8% of female AMEs in Canada. Recognizing the need for mentorship, she co-founded the “Hangar Queens”, the first female AME network in Canada. She is a licensed M1 and M2 Aircraft Maintenance Engineer and has been working in the industry for the past nine years. In addition, Alisha has been a maintenance controller and a line maintenance supervisor. She volunteers with Canadian Women in Aviation and Elevate Aviation. She has been Vice-President of the Pacific Aircraft Maintenance Engineering Association and serves on the BC Aviation Council Youth Engagement committee. Alisha is passionate about giving back to the industry and enjoys promoting aviation career options for young women.

Rising Star – Yasna Taieb

Yasna Taieb first joined the aviation community through the Royal Canadian Air Cadets Program, where she earned her glider and private pilot licenses. Yasna went on to join the Cadet Instructor Cadre of the Canadian Forces Reserves and currently holds the rank of Lieutenant. She has taught glider and private pilot ground schools to youth in five different squadrons and is presently the Training Officer with 540 Golden Hawks. Yasna is actively involved with The Ninety-Nines, Women in Aviation, Dreams Take Flight and The Northern Lights Aero Foundation, leading the mentorship and social media programs. Yasna works with women in the Canadian Afghan community to reach their full potential through leading grant-funded community initiatives. She holds her Commercial Pilot License and will be working on her multi-IFR ratings with the intention of continuing her studies in aviation safety and human factors. She is currently an in-flight operations manager with Jazz Aviation.

Captain Judy Cameron 2023 Scholarship Recipients

8 March 8, 2023, Toronto, ON – In honour of International Women’s Day, the Northern Lights Aero Foundation proudly announces the recipients of the Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship. This scholarship, administered by Northern Lights, is entering its fourth year of Air Canada sponsorship. For 2023, the scholarship has doubled to eight awards of $5,000 each, with the addition of sponsorship by CAE. The Captain Judy Cameron Scholarship targets women who are Canadian citizens and who are enrolled in a fixed wing aviation flight program at a college, university, or flight school, or an aircraft repair and maintenance program anywhere in Canada.

“I am delighted that Air Canada and CAE have partnered to double the number of Captain Judy Cameron scholarships for 2023. Each recipient has shown great determination in their training, and the willingness to encourage and inspire others in their aviation journey. As the scholarship goes into its fourth year, it is wonderful to hear the success stories of former recipients. Two women are flying as First Officers, another is a fire patrol pilot, and two more are flight instructors. Thank you to Air Canada and CAE for helping to make their dreams a reality,” said Judy Cameron, Boeing 777 Captain at Air Canada (retired), and Director of the Northern Lights Aero Foundation.

Olivia White, 2020 recipient says, “I have started flying Twin Otters at Rise Air in Northern Saskatchewan. I have been absolutely loving the work and am just so excited to finally and officially be a commercial pilot. The scholarship was a huge help in getting me to where I am. “

The Northern Lights Aero Foundation inspires and celebrates Canadian women in aviation and aerospace with mentorship, scholarships, outreach, and an annual award event. This year’s award gala will be held on October 21 at the Pearson Convention Centre, Brampton, Ontario.

Nominations Open for Prestigious Aviation and Aerospace Awards

2 January 2023 Markham, ON – The Northern Lights Aero Foundation is now accepting nominations for its 14th annual awards program. Each year, the national not-for-profit foundation honours outstanding Canadian women who have made a significant contribution to aviation or aerospace, and who continue to lay the ground work for other women to enter or excel in these industries.

The Northern Lights Aero Foundation’s Elsie MacGill Awards – The “Elsie” is named after aviation pioneer and human rights advocate Elsie Gregory MacGill, the world’s first female aircraft designer. MacGill graduated from the University of Toronto’s electrical engineering program in 1927 and later became pivotal in the design and production of the Hawker Hurricane in Canada during the Second World War. During her career, MacGill was appointed to the Canadian Royal Commission on the Status of Women, and was made an Officer of the Order of Canada.

The Foundation is always working on new initiatives, including outreach, mentorship and scholarship. We recently set up a Junior Board to teach young women about board governance.

The 2023 recipients will be selected by a judging panel comprised of industry and government professionals, and will be honoured at the Elsie Awards gala in the Toronto area in the fall of 2023.
